Adios Mountain West Conference

Thursday March 24,2011 will go down in sports history as the high-water mark for the MWC in basketball. 2 Sweet 16 participants will Never happen again. With the defections of the Utah schools along with San Diego State and UNLV trying to reload, next years' MWC may be no better than the WAC or Sunbelt in quality squads. If you have to count on New Mexico or CSU and to have the Rebels and Aztecs magically get better, then your league is in big trouble with a 1-bid possibility next March. What happens in conference play is that you must be able to compete with the top teams and attempt to elevate your program to at least stay relatively competitive. If your immediate competition is not top quality, then it becomes very easy to pound your chest and claim dominance in a watered-down league. I am afraid that this will happen to my favorite league and the additions of Nevada and Fresno does nothing to upgrade the MWC.
